Joshua Tree Marriage Proposals: Everything to Know!

By your officiant, Isiah

I remember planning my marriage proposal. I knew Diana would say “yes.” We’d discussed marriage many times before. I even knew what types of rings she liked: Non-traditional, silver band (although white-gold was acceptable), not a white diamond, etc. I even knew how I wanted to propose. I had written it out in my journal a few different ways, narrowing my options until I picked the perfect moment.

But even with all that preparation, I was nervous. It’s only natural to get butterflies before bending the knee, confessing your love, and offering your partner an engagement ring.

All of this is to say—your marriage proposal is a combination of good planning and an openness to whatever happens.

Tips for Your Joshua Tree Proposal

Skip the Crowds for a More Intimate Proposal

Public spaces are shared spaces, but there are still steps you can take to ensure you have a bit of privacy when you pop the question. Early mornings work great, as well as weekdays instead of weekends. You can also scope out spots that are slightly off trail or more private.

It may seem counterintuitive, but skip holidays or get help finding a location that’s off the beaten path.

Then again, there are times when other people are just an inevitability. In which case, do what you can to go slow, be deliberate, and speak directly into your partner’s eyes to make them feel like the only person in the moment.

Hire a Photographer for Your Marriage Proposal

Here’s why you should hire a skilled photographer for your proposal:

  • They can capture the moment for you! Proposals go by in the blink of an (often teary) eye. So capturing it can make all the difference.

  • They can help you plan your proposal. As a local Joshua Tree photographer, we know all the best spots for privacy, gorgeous views, timing, and more! With my help, you can focus on the proposal—without sweating the details.

  • They can help you justify the photos. Proposals are most often surprises. A lot of people want photos, but are unsure how to swing those elements of surprise with a camera person in tow. Don’t worry—we can help you tailor-make the perfect plan.

Prepare for Desert Weather

Deserts are all about extremes: Extreme heat, fast winds, cold nights, dry conditions—you name it. But that’s okay, because those elements also shape the incredible landscape we cherish.

To make sure everything goes smoothly:

  • Pack and wear layers for temperature changes and skin protection

  • Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and the like

  • Drink lots of water and electrolytes

  • Bring food and a snack to keep your energy up

  • Take breaks in the shade when you need to

Remember, there is no bad weather—only poor preparation. Good preparation makes everyone smile.

If you’re planning on proposing in the summer, choose the early morning hours or late evening to avoid the heat (sometimes hitting 110ºF). Winter can get chilly, so bring a jacket. Fall and spring are the most forgiving in temperature, but you can expect windy days.

Make Your Proposal Meaningful: Here’s How

As a Joshua Tree wedding officiant, I’ve seen a lot of adventure weddings and heard a lot of proposal stories. My wife, Diana, is an outdoor wedding photographer, so she similarly knows a large number of proposal stories. And all the best ones share the same single element—it was perfect for them.

We’ve heard super unique stories (like creating a scavenger hunt of romantic objects), extremely personal stories (like digging up keepsakes from their first date), spontaneous proposals (like popping the question before they even bought a ring), and even slightly chaotic proposals (like accidentally eating a weed gummy before being proposed to).

Each of those stories is special because it was all their own. Ironically, it’s the proposals that had too much of the “I did what I thought I should do” that aren’t as closely held to the heart.

Even if you choose something that sticks to the basics, as long as you know that the proposal represents the best of you both—then it’ll go exactly as it should.

The beauty of Joshua Trees and other foliage makes for a perfect backdrop for proposal photos. But you can still make it yours by adding an activity or some kind of decor. Consider hiring a picnic company, bringing some champagne to pop, or doing an activity together.

Meet Your Joshua Tree Proposal Photographer

I'm Diana, a Joshua Tree local and California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 21 years and counting, and I’ve captured many photography sessions in Joshua Tree.

How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding, and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
