In November 2025, it was announced that the Supreme Court would review a case against Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that made same-sex marriage legal.

As a longtime, staunch ally of the queer community, this had me wildly upset. I believe in the right of all individuals to marry who they love. I also knew that some US-based couples might want to rush to get married to preserve their rights. But I knew the rush to get married didn’t mean gay couples had to sacrifice a wedding day full of meaning and love in a beautiful location. So I offered a discount for LGBT couples for the winter season.

Enter Ella & Carson, who found my post on Instagram and reached out. They were understandably worried about what was happening, so we got to work on crafting a wedding that was very soon, but also full of meaning, love, and the beauty of Redwoods National Park.

Secret Redwoods Elopement

Not very many people knew these two were eloping, which adds to the fun for us. Like a secret kept for the best intentions, just the two of you. Except Isiah and I got to be involved too.

We met up at a very cute, colorful, retro Airbnb overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I gathered their details for some flat lay shots, and I was delighted to find references to ACOTAR, as well as some favorites of theirs such as Disney and Taylor Swift.

After the two got ready together and put some finishing details on their Lego bouquet, we headed to the redwoods for their ceremony. We arrived at Redwood National Park, saw some elk, then headed up into the trees for the ceremony.

There, we had a quiet ceremony with absolutely no one else around. Under the thick canopy, these two said their vows through teary eyes during a handfasting ceremony.

Afterwards, we slowly walked down the trail, stopping to look at the thick greenery, sun poking through the trees, and thick mud from recent storms.

One of the things I find so amazing about the redwoods is the access to diverse landscapes. In just 20 minutes, we were at a beach, exploring the foggy coastline and cool driftwood. We stayed after the sun had set, capturing some beautiful portraits with lanterns and watching the fog roll in.

Tips for Your Redwoods Elopement

The redwoods are beautiful and unique—perfect for weddings. But the area is remote and complex, so come prepared! Here are a few things to know when planning your redwoods elopement:

Work with your photographer regarding locations, permits, and venues. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep—and you need someone to help navigate that! Hire a photographer like yours truly with knowledge of the area and the complex permitting system.
Practice Leave No Trace when getting married outdoors. The earth needs protecting, especially the redwoods! Follow LNT guidelines: like packing out what you pack in, staying on trails, and respecting the local flora and fauna. Oh, and no live florals in this park!
Consider the timing. Weekdays are always best in state and national parks. Make sure to avoid holidays. The best time of year is the summer, but that’s also the busiest and driest. Eloping in or around the winter season? It WILL rain!
