How to Have a Starry, Fantasy-Themed Wedding

Wedding ideas for fans of A Court of Thorns & Roses by Sarah J. Mass

It was an especially warm day in San Francisco. A heatwave gripped the city, despite it being early October. I was photographing one of my couples to celebrate their engagement, making small talk between poses. We talked about Halloween, despite it not feeling quite like fall. I asked if they had any costume ideas, and she said they wanted to dress up as a couple from a book, but they weren’t sure if anyone would recognize the costume.

Immediately, I knew what she meant. But I slyly asked, “Which book?” As you might have guessed too, it was A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas.

It’s not just me. You may have heard about this book too, or even read it yourself. It’s absolutely surging in popularity, and fans are super into it. Personally, I’ve read every Sarah J. Maas book to date, and it feels like a guilty pleasure. But it’s also the most exciting I’ve been about a book series in a while—preceded by other fantasy novels like Dune or Harry Potter. And since we probably aren’t getting any more Game of Thrones books any time soon, I need some long fantasy to read!

Unlike Game of Thrones, A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) features weddings in a positive light (in a way—fans, don’t @ me! I’m trying to keep this spoiler-free). So that got me thinking—why aren’t there more ACOTAR-themed weddings? After all, starry and fantasy weddings are pretty popular.

So, let’s get into how to have the Starfall wedding of your dreams:

  • Pre-Wedding: Start early with a non-traditional engagement ring. Black, gray, and blue stones fit the bill.

  • Get Dressed: Vibe check. Are you more traditional? Get a white wedding dress with stars, or a cape! Not about tradition? Grab a dark blue or black dress instead.

  • Now the Details: Maas knows how to weave a story with engaging imagery. ACOTAR is filled with memorable and iconic visuals; which makes the details effortless and beautiful. From rings to necklaces to temporary tattoos, the details are where the wedding shines.

  • Ceremony: It’s no secret that Maas pulls inspiration from so many places, including Celtic lore. Handfasting is a great way to bring that inspiration into your fantasy wedding.

  • Getting Tattoos: Yes, you can get tattooed on your wedding day! IYKYK ;)

  • Guests, Get in Line: Tell your guests about the theme, maybe even give them a color chart.

  • Decor: Assuming you’re a fan of ACOMAF, you’ll be doing a lot of darker and starry vibes. Get some astral decor and invitations.
