Saguaro National Park Elopement: Murals, Cacti & Sus Picnic Area
Kalie & Justin
The desert calls to all kinds of couples, but usually the lovers who appreciate rugged adventures, romantic vistas, and intimacy over tradition. So, naturally, the two of us behind Love & Latitudes (Diana & Isiah) get along with couples who choose desert elopements and weddings.
When we met Kalie and Justin in Tucson for their special day, I could tell they shared that feeling.
Colorful Wedding Portraits in Tucson
Kalie & Justin showed up to meet us in downtown Tucson, Arizona. The day was already hot and bright, which is often the case in this area. But the temperatures didn’t slow down Kalie & Justin at all.
They both showed up dressed to perfection. Kalie looked stunning with her brightly colored hair and shiny shawl. Justin has a rugged, classic look with a flawless boot and suspender combo.
With wedding-day looks so crisp, we simply had to find an iconic background for the couple’s portraits. We stopped by a few of Tucson’s emblematic murals. These are so colorful and impactful, it was just a chef’s kiss.

Private Vows During Saguaro Wedding Ceremony
After exploring the murals, we headed into Saguaro National Park. Kalie & Justin love this national park for its views, wildlife, and (obviously) the cacti. To make the moment all the more special, our bride and groom invited their closest friends to the short elopement ceremony.
My husband, Isiah, acting as the wedding officiant, led everyone to a secluded spot, where the couple had an opening reading, a wedding ceremony, and private vows—yes, during their ceremony!
How did this work? Well, when it was time for the vows, Isiah urged the guests to separate from the couple to give them a bit of privacy. As the photographer, I backed up too, but still snapped as many photos as I could.
That may seem strange to those unfamiliar with elopements, but we’ve done it all before. And it’s all about giving the couple the moments they desire most.
Sus Picnic Wedding & Photography
After saying “I do,” exchanging rings, and the big kiss, Kalie & Justin gathered their friends for group photos and a champagne pop.
As the elopement guests stopped by the Sus Picnic Area for a snack and some champagne, I stole away Kalie & Justin for a hike up the hill. The trail is a bit tough to follow, if you’ve not walked it before. The ground was a bit loose and steep, too. But our newlyweds were ready for the challenge! And their reward was some breathtaking views of open skies, thousands of cacti, and each other’s smiling faces glowing in the sun.
After sunset, we joined them briefly for dinner at Charro Steak & Del Rey, before giving our bride and groom time alone with their friends.
So, you can see what we mean about how special it is to get married in the desert. And how awesome it can be to cherish an intimate wedding ceremony in this gorgeous ecosystem.
Tips for Your Saguaro National Park Elopement
The desert is well-deserving of its reputation for dry heat and wind. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying this incredible ecosystem on your wedding day.
Here are essential tips to make the most of your Saguaro East elopement:
Trust your photograph to help you with locations, permits, and venues. Saguaro is a bisected national park, with protected lands on either side of the city of Tucson. To put it another way, there are tons of opportunities for photos, exploration, and adventure on your wedding day.
Protect the landscape, flora, and fauna by practicing Leave No Trace (LNT). Even on your wedding day, it’s important to pack out your trash, stay on trail, watch your step when around plants, give animals space to be wild, and come prepared for any weather.
Think about time of day, seasonality, and more. For example, weekdays are less busy than weekends, and holidays should be avoided. Saguaro is in the desert, so it’s too warm in the summer for elopements. Consider early spring, late fall, and winter weddings.
Looking for adventure and activities? If so, Saguaro is a great spot for all sorts of outdoor fun! Talk with your photographer about including some fun activities like hiking, offroading, horseback riding, picnics, visiting museums and murals, and more!

Meet Your Saguaro National Park Elopement Photographer
I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 15 years and counting. I’ve captured over 50 weddings, 12 of which took place in the Eastern Sierra. In my free time, you'll find me traveling through the southwest and the East Side with my husband in our van, Clyde.
How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
