Intimate Wedding at Sus Picnic Area

Pyper & Marshall

Immediately upon meeting Pyper & Marshall, I knew they had great taste, impeccable style, and a head-over-heels obsession with each other. As an adventure wedding photographer, I love to work with couples who adore each other.

First-Look Photos Amongst the Cacti

It was just before sunrise in Saguaro National Park. The air was cool, and the atmosphere was calm—when Marshall arrived dressed in his suit. We made small talk as I prepped my camera gear. Pyper would be arriving soon for first-look photos.

From experience, I know that partners can feel a bit nervous before the festivities. But Marshall seemed totally at ease. I could tell he was excited for the day, but also very comfortable waiting for his bride.

My husband (and the wedding officiant for the day) Isiah, walked Marshall down the hiking trail, as I hung back to intercept Pyper, as her family drove her in.

Our bride applied finishing touches to her makeup, before stepping out of the car in a full-on cape, made by her grandmother for her when she was 10 years old. Not only did it fit the vibe perfectly, but it was a sentimental element that made the moment all the more magical.

In addition to that, Pyper was wearing a hairpiece that her grandmother made for her mother’s wedding, and had a faux floral arrangement made by her mother. What a creative family!

Once Marshall turned around to see Pyper, I could tell the immediate connection of love and awe. They embraced, danced, and discussed their excitement for the day ahead.

Arizona Saguaros, Vows, Handfasting

After a cute first look, Pyper and Marshall read their vows privately together. I love moments like this, where no one is around to hear. Your vows are sometimes just for you two, and you have the space and time to fully express those emotions you hold so dear.

We then explored one of my favorite trails in the park. It was so serene, with just one other family walking around, we almost had the whole place to ourselves. We watched the sun rise over the valley as tall, ancient saguaros lit up with the winter sun.

We made a few pauses for dancing! Pyper and Marshall are amazing dancers! And my camera shutter simply couldn’t get enough of this majesty.

While we were exploring, their families came together to set up a beautiful breakfast table at Sus Picnic Area. We headed over, taking a moment for hellos before jumping into the ceremony. With just a few family members around, the couple had a handfasting ceremony amongst the Sonoran desert fauna. And yes, the handfasting cord was indeed made by her mom!

Afterwards, we all had breakfast together. Bagels from a local spot, mimosas, and Nothing Bundt Cakes were served on one of the picnic tables with purple-colored glasses and edible glitter. Pro tip—Nothing Bundt Cakes has a gluten-free cake!

During breakfast, Pyper and Marshall played their guest’s own favorite or wedding day songs, and gave each couple or person a gift. It was so thoughtful and made for some fun moments!

And I can’t leave out the amazing book-themed details and other items. Pyper and Marshall are lovers of dark romance, so they brought a stack of their favorites as decoration, including A Touch Of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair.

Two of their family members made and painted (yes, physically built) cornhole boards for them, painting them with Persephone and Hades, the two mythological characters they dress up as the most. They had an instant camera and took photos of each couple, and left out comment cards for everyone to fill out. Seriously, they had some of the best details!

After all was said and done, the beautiful mini-reception and breakfast wrapped up. It was an unseasonably warm winter day, so they headed to the pool and later went dancing! What a fun way to celebrate.

Tips for Your Sus Picnic Area Wedding

Dry, hot weather? Cactus everywhere? Permits? Here are a few quick tips for navigating an intimate wedding at Sus Picnic Area in Saguaro National Park.

  • Work with your photographer regarding locations, permits, and venues. Sus Picnic Area requires a permit for each wedding. Ask your photographer to help you navigate the park’s restrictions and permitting process.

  • Practice Leave No Trace when getting married outdoors. The natural world deserves our respect, so always follow LNT guidelines: like packing out what you pack in, staying on trails, and giving animals space to roam.

  • Consider the timing. Aim for weekdays and morning ceremonies when fewer people are out. And avoid summer as the heat can be intense! What to Expect When Getting Married in a National Park >

  • Looking for adventure and activities? Tucson and Saguaro National Park are a great spot for activities! You have the obvious, like a picnic. But don’t miss out on horseback riding, hot air balloons, and more. Talk with your photographer about including some activities

Meet Your Sus Picnic Area Wedding Photographer

I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 18 years and counting, and I fell in love with capturing Saguaro NP after my first visit in 2021. Despite living in Phoenix for years, I had never visited Tucson! Since then, I’ve captured over 80 weddings, 15 of which took place in the greater Tucson area.

How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
