Whenever I get couples wanting to elope in Southern California in a forest, I always laugh. See when I picture a forest, I think of something like the rainforests of Olympic National Park or the ancient Redwoods National Park.
But you can absolutely find forests if you know where to look. Idyllwild, Lake Arrowhead, and more can all be found just hours from the coast. And of course—Big Bear Lake, where you’ll find plenty of pine forests and beautiful lake views.
Unassuming, quiet, and idyllic—Big Bear is the perfect location for couples who want a slower and more connected wedding day. So let’s get started on planning your Big Bear elopement!
Wedding Permits for Big Bear Lake
You’re in luck—because a ton of the land surrounding Big Bear Lake falls within San Bernardino National Forest. That means, as long as you are having a small wedding, you don’t need a permit! Noncommercial Group Use Permits are required if your wedding has over 75 people or involves building structures.
That being said, there are some locations where you might need a permit. So if you aren’t getting married on National Forest land or a private location, check the local rules and regulations.

Marriage Licenses for Big Bear Lake
To get married in Big Bear, you’ll need a marriage license from San Bernardino County. For residents of California, you can obtain a marriage license anywhere within the state.
Here’s the quick and easy steps for how to get a marriage license:
Search for the local county clerk’s office.
Apply online for a marriage license.
Make an appointment to pick it up together with your IDs.
Bring it to your wedding ceremony to be signed.
Deliver it back to the same county clerk’s office in person or via mail.

There are plenty of reasons to grab a venue or cabin in Big Bear. You might want more privacy than public lands allows. Or maybe you have many guests coming, or some with mobility issues. Either way, you can absolutely find venues of all sizes in the area.
Into the Woods: A venue nestled in the forest of Big Bear with plenty of space for micro- or large weddings.
Gold Mountain Manor: This historic cabin near Big Bear is a bed and breakfast AND venue, so your guests can stay on site. They also have smaller packages for micro-weddings.
Apples Bed & Breakfast This pink bed and breakfast in Big Bear is a great spot for a garden wedding. As a plus, you can stay here!
N+P Boutique Lodge: A boutique hotel with ceremony options and room for your guests to stay on site. They also have smaller packages for elopements and micro-weddings.
The Outpost: The only venue on this list that’s in Fawnskin on the north side of the lake. There are cabins so your guests can stay on site as well.
Big Bear Mountain Resort: Elope or have a traditional wedding with views of Big Bear Lake. Includes Snow Valley, Snow Summit, and Bear Mountain.
Santana Mavericks Bar N Grill: Rent out this restaurant with views of Big Bear Lake for your wedding or reception.
Knickerbocker Mansion Multiple large rustic cabins on 2+ acres, so there’s room for a wedding ceremony and a cabin stay for your guests.
Shay Meadows Ranch A ranch near Big Bear with room for a wedding and your guests can stay.

Eloping on National Forest land means you can bring your pets! Just make sure to follow these quick tips: keep them on a leash, have someone who can help if they are anxious or reactive, and bring some treats,
Keep Big Bear Clean: Leave No Trace
Outdoor places are worth protecting, especially on your wedding day. It’s your responsibility to know, understand, and follow Leave No Trace (LNT) guidelines while visiting Big Bear.
Keep these guidelines in mind:
Pack it in, pack it out. Take trash with you, even organic material such as orange peels.
Dispose of waste in proper receptacles. If there isn’t a trash can available, keep your trash until you find one.
Obey signs if they tell you to stay on the trail. Alpine areas can be delicate.
Don’t disturb local flora and fauna, and don’t feed animals. Properly store food if camping or hiking to keep bears safe.
Watch where you step—don’t crush the brush.
Don’t set fires if there’s a ban.
When to Get Married at Big Bear Lake
Here’s a quickie guide to season in Big Bear:
Spring: A beautiful time to visit as it’s quieter and there’s potential for springtime flowers. There can be unpredictable weather and there may be snow still at higher elevations. Some locations could be closed if it’s been a wet season.
Summer: This season is warm, but not too intense compared to nearby areas. This is the best time to visit for summer sports like getting on the trails and in the water. Just be aware there are more crowds during this time.
Winter: Yes, it snows here! Big Bear Lake sits at around 6700 feet in elevation, so there can be snow in the winter. Chains are required! If you’ve dreamed of a winter wonderland wedding, this is a great place to be. Just be aware of potential road closures if there’s a storm and limited access to some more remote locations. And while it does get snow, don’t expect as much as higher elevations such as the Eastern Sierra.
Fall: Mild temperatures, potential for fall color, and less crowds makes this a great time to visit.

Don’t depend too much on public transportation—remote and small locations like Big Bear require cars. Rent one at the airport, check Turo, or bring your own.
Big Bear might have an airport, but it’s for private planes only. So here’s your best options for flying in:
Palm Springs International Airport: This small airport is just 2 hours from Big Bear
Los Angeles International Airport: LA’s largest airport is a mess, but it’ll be the cheapest option and it’s just 3 hours from Big Bear.
John Wayne Airport: Another small and chill airport 2 hours from Big Bear.

Hike: There are plenty of trails around Big Bear that lead to sweeping lake views and more private moments.
Watersports: Kayak, paddleboard, jetskis, and more! Rent one or bring your own and experience Big Bear Lake from the water.
Snowsports: Coming in the winter? You can ski, snowboard, or have other fun in the snow at Big Bear Mountain Resort.
Offroading: Bring your own rig or rent one in town. Exploring 4x4 roads means you can get away from the crowds and have some fun doing it!
Horseback Riding: Love horses? There’s a petting zoo in town that also does horseback riding tours.
Alpine Slide: Release your inner child with mountain fun at Alpine Slide. They have a coaster, slides, go karting, and more.
Zip Line: What a crazy thing to do in wedding attire, right? Book a zip line tour in town.

Big Bear is a tiny area. While there may be a few wedding vendors, don’t forget to widen your search to the surrounding areas, such as Lake Arrowhead, San Bernardino, Riverside, and even Joshua Tree (where I’m from!). Just keep in mind, some vendors might have travel fees.
Best Advice for Getting Married at Big Bear Lake
Winding, steep roads: Roads in the mountains can be winding and steep, so be prepared by driving during the daytime if you aren’t used to it. Bring medication if you’re prone to car sickness.
Elevation: Big Bear Lake sits above 6,000 ft in elevation. Come early and drink plenty of water to help acclimate.
Dramatic temperatures: Temperature and weather can change quickly in the mountains, especially in spring and fall. Bring layers and check the forecast often.
