Yucca Valley Airbnb Wedding

Dagny & John

Every couple is different. Some are stoic and introverted, while others express themselves to the fullest extent. Dagny and John were the latter. Tears were shed and laughs were had in what was one of the most expressive weddings I’ve captured.

The love was palpable between these two—and that overwhelming joy spilled over into their very small wedding party of three guests. In the couple’s own words: “Look, we know how disgustingly in love we are.”

A Joshua Tree Airbnb Wedding

Dagny & John had never been to Joshua Tree, but they absolutely fell in love with photos of this famous California national park. So, with their two closest friends and their baby in tow, they headed out to an Airbnb in Yucca Valley for their intimate elopement.

Joshua Tree is well known for its Airbnbs, which might seem odd at first. But many of these rentable spaces offer some really cool amenities. Without even trying, you’re likely to find hot tubs, cowboy tubs, hammocks, funky outdoor furniture, out-of-this-world decor, and more! And while the area has its issues with short-term rentals, there are some truly beautiful spots to stay at that will give you the high-end feel of eloping at an amazing venue.

I met with Dagny & John at their Airbnb in the morning, just as the couple was getting ready. Dagny carefully donned her jewelry and dress; while, yes, even John had his hair and makeup done. We love to see the guys put some time and effort into looking good for the big day!

After getting ready, I carefully positioned the soon-to-be newlyweds for their first-look photos. Even though the moment was quick, the couple was overjoyed to see each other, decked in their wedding bests, for the first time.

Up next was a bit of nosh, complete with cocktails and sweet treats. I stole the couple away for a little alone time together—an ideal way to recharge for the next bit of emotional expenditure.

Now it was time for the ceremony. And here’s where everything hit the peak! Dagny & John stood facing each other, the sweeping desert skies looked down on them, as their friend officiated the ceremony. From opening to vows, ring exchange to big kiss—the three of them simply could not stop happy crying! It was nearly impossible for me to narrow down photos from the ceremony—every single snapshot was brimming with love and wonder.

With the very emotional ceremony coming to an end, our officiant for the day whipped out the legal documentation and pen. This was followed by some quick portraits of the couple and their guests. But the real highlight for this portion of the day was busting out the couple’s favorite dessert combination—pink champagne and donuts. What a combo!

And what better way to end your wedding day than climbing some rocks! Yes, Dagny & John—still dressed in their wedding attire—braved the stone and boulders of the area, under the majestic Yucca Valley sky.

Believe it or not, we didn’t have to go into the park for these amazing views. Just check out all the photos of this suave and badass couple.

Tips for Your Yucca Valley Wedding

Here are a few things to know when planning your Yucca Valley wedding day:

  • Work with your photographer regarding locations, permits, and venues. If you’re getting married in Joshua Tree National Park, you’ll need special use permits. But don’t worry, I’m happy to walk you through the process. Choosing a venue instead? No problem, we’ve got a guide for that. Want to get married in an Airbnb like Dagny & John? You’ll need to ask your Airbnb host if that’s alright with them, especially if you plan on inviting guests or a photographer.

  • Practice Leave No Trace when getting married outdoors. Follow LNT guidelines to keep the natural world healthy and thriving. That’s true whether you are having a wedding in the park or simply exploring the outdoors.

  • Consider the timing. If you’re heading into the national park, note that weekdays and off-season offer more privacy and fewer crowds. If you choose a venue or Airbnb, keep an eye on seasonality, as summer is very hot.

  • Looking for adventure and activities? Picnics, off-roading, hiking, climbing, and more—Joshua Tree is a hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. Check out our list of wedding day activities.

Meet Your Yucca Valley Wedding Photographer

I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 15 years and counting. I’ve captured over 50 weddings, many of which happen in Joshua Tree. The desert calls to me—I consider this spot my home park, I’ve been visiting since I was a baby!

How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own Joshua Tree wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
