Redwoods Micro-Wedding at Organ Donor Grove

Madison & Jay

Small, intimate weddings are such a joy to photograph. I’m not sure I’ll ever get over what an honor it is to capture a couple’s special day. That’s all the more true when the guest count is small enough to allow for lots of face-to-face time between the couple and their friends and family. And although I’m working the big day, I feel charmed to be part of the attendance.

For Madison & Jay’s micro-wedding in Redwoods National Park in California, their friends and family really added to the magic and majesty of the day.

Surrounded by California Redwoods on Your Wedding Day

I met Madison & Jay at their respective Airbnbs as they got ready for the big day separately. Jay donned his suit jacket and boutonniere—while in another room, Madison got help with her makeup, dress, and jewelry. There was certainly some nervous energy from the bride and groom, but that only added to the charm.

As the soon-to-be newlyweds got ready, I snapped some detail shots. It’s the little things that really add up. All the jewelry, shoes, and heirlooms add a bit of personality to the festivities.

Madison chose to do first-look photos with her dad and her stepdad, since they both play an important role in her life. Both were touched by seeing her in her white dress for the first time.

Next up, the couple and all their guests took the short journey to Organ Donor Grove in Redwoods National Park. The grove was already set up with chairs, which made everyone feel small amongst the towering and ancient trees. That’s the power of the Redwoods, after all. Their ability to inspire magic and majesty in such small creatures as we are.

Madison & Jay’s friends and family were simply bubbling with delight as the ceremony began. As an intimate wedding photographer, I eagerly snapped up every candid smile, laugh, and teary eye I could, as Madison & Jay read their vows to one another.

At the end of the ceremony, everyone cheered as Madison & Jay leaned in for their first kiss as husband and wife.

During post-ceremony activities, you could tell all the excited tension had melted away. Madison, Jay, and all their guests couldn’t help goofing around. There was even a pope-esque costume change! Haven’t seen that one before!

Following the couple's portraits and family photos, our newlyweds popped a bottle of champagne, and simply let the incredible day sink it before exploring the rest of the grove. While small, this grove is absolutely gorgeous and there are so many angles to capture. Especially as that afternoon light comes in through the trees.

And because nothing you choose for your wedding is too much, we did set aside a moment for these two to honor their recently deceased cat. If it’s important, there’s always time for it.

By the time we parted ways, we had experienced just a bit of the magic that is the redwoods.

Tips for Having a Micro-Wedding in the Redwoods

Here are a few things to know when planning your redwoods micro-wedding:

  • Work with your photographer regarding locations, permits, and venues. The redwoods area of California is beautiful, and heavily protected. Which means getting married here involves navigating a complex permit system. Not to worry, as an experienced photographer and sometimes planner in this area, I’m here to help!

  • Practice Leave No Trace when getting married outdoors. As mentioned, this is a heavily protected place—and for good reason! Redwoods NP is a delicate ecosystem at risk from climate change. So do your part by following LNT guidelines: like packing out what you pack in, staying on trails, and respecting the local flora and fauna.

  • Consider the timing. For example, weekdays are less busy than weekends. As for seasonality, summers can be drier and easier to navigate. Winters are tough as it rains quite often. What to Expect When Getting Married in a National Park >

  • Looking for adventure and activities? There’s fun to be had in the redwoods! Driving through trees, doing redwood sky walks, picnicking, and more. Talk with your photographer about including some activities

Meet Your Redwoods Micro-Wedding Photographer

I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 18 years and counting. I’ve captured over 80 weddings, 10 of which took place in the Redwoods. In my free time, you'll find me traveling through the southwest and the PNW with my husband in our van, Clyde.

How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
