Eastern Sierra Hiking Elopement in Bishop, CA
Kate & Brandon
When it comes to sharing outdoor elopement and adventure wedding stories, I sometimes wonder how much of the behind-the-scenes details to include. But for this one, I think it helps paint a picture.
A Peek Behind the Scenes
About a month before Kate & Brandon’s adventure wedding, I got a message from another elopement photographer asking if I’d be willing and available to take over.
This happens from time to time. Photographers are people too, and issues with family, health, and the like, unfortunately, do come up. The best and most professional photographers will always ensure that you have the coverage you need, even if they can’t be the ones to fulfill it.
As this other photographer described the gig to me, it sounded like a dream come true. Two days of photography, a seven-mile round-trip of hiking through the Eastern Sierra, and a couple who simply adore each other. Pretty spectacular, right?
As an avid hiker and an Eastern Sierra enthusiast, I was pumped! And it just so happened that this opportunity fit perfectly into what was a crazy travel schedule. I would actually be in the Mammoth Lakes area just in time. Talk about the stars aligning!
A Secluded Sunset Hike on Wedding’s Eve
Kate & Brandon love the outdoors, almost as much as they are head-over-heels for each other. They knew a big wedding wasn’t for them. Instead, they had a vision for their wedding day: A few friends, a vow reading, and a ceremony spot they themselves could choose. And they had the ideal spot in mind!
The night before the big hike slash official wedding day, I met with Kate & Brandon for an evening photoshoot. Even though we were near a very popular hiking trail in the Eastern Sierra near Bishop, this offshoot was a hidden gem—a quiet creek running through a gorgeous mountain view. A spot not many people head to. Secluded and breathtaking.
We had the hike mostly to ourselves, which led to so many beautiful moments for the couple. Along with their hairstylist—who came on the hike with us, Kate & Brandon goofed around—exchanged gifts, and explored the wildflowers in a romantic daze. They even cracked a cold one in the parking lot while watching this insane sunset!
The Perfect Eastern Sierra Wedding Day
I woke up early, early, early to meet with Kate & Brandon just before dawn. The couple and their guests packed into an early, busy parking lot. Like I said, this is one of the most popular hiking areas near the Bishop area. Packed with snacks, water, champagne, and wedding attire, we trekked out on an impressive 7-mile round trip.
Our first steps made a beeline for the halfway point, where the ceremony would be held. Only stopping every so often to admire the various incredible lakes along the way. This was certainly not an easy hike, but everyone in the wedding party was well prepared for the challenge.
When we finally arrived at our chosen lake, Kate & Brandon kicked back with their guests for a well-deserved break. Treating themselves to snacks and water, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to just chill and interact. A welcome change of pace from the demanding hike. I love how much importance this couple placed on candid moments.
After a quick outfit change—from hiking chic to wedding fabulous—Kate & Brandon were ready for their non-traditional wedding ceremony. Officiated by a friend, the couple focused first and foremost on their shared commitment to one another.
Emotions ran the gamut from silly to tearful and nostalgic to optimistic. But the real highlight was the truly amazing vows Kate & Brandon shared with one another—which I won’t share here, because some things are too personal to share outside of a wedding ceremony.
Just when you think you’ve cut the trickle, Kate & Brandon’s guests made their own heartfelt speeches about the couple. Tears sparkled in everyone's eyes—which is what wedding photographers live for!
Post-ceremony, the crew had a picnic with charcuterie and champagne. By now, the sun was out, warming everyone up despite the forecast for rain. After some time spent together, the crew headed back out to the trailhead, stopping to check out some lakes and take a Bigfoot-inspired photo. Who knows? Maybe one of these days I’ll capture the real Bigfoot on camera!
At the end, Brandon insisted they lie down in the creek—dressed in the height of wedding fashion—which made for some adorable photos and a great way to cool off from a long hike.
Tips for Your Hiking Elopement
Hiking elopements can be so beautiful, but there are some vital considerations:
- Know your abilities: Some hikes are easier than others, especially when they involve elevation gain. Can you complete the hike you’ve chosen? Can your guests? Will it be enjoyable if it’s harder? Will everyone be able to keep it up if the weather changes? Make sure you know what you and your guests can accomplish.
- Work with your photographer regarding locations, permits, and venues. Each area has its own regulations or insider knowledge, so it’s best to work with a planner or adventure wedding photographer who can help out.
- Practice Leave No Trace when getting married outdoors. Keep the natural world happy and healthy by following LNT guidelines: like packing out what you pack in, staying on trails, and respecting the local flora and fauna.
- Consider the timing. For example, weekdays are less busy than weekends. If you choose a popular trail, you may want to consider crowds and parking.
- Pack what you need. This includes food, water, first-aid supplies, sunscreen, bug spray, and all the other essentials. Not to mention the wedding gear like vow books, rings, champagne, and all the rest.
- Keep an eye on the weather. Thunderstorms were a big concern ahead of Kate & Brandon’s wedding—up until the last moment. We lucked out. But it’s crucial to prepare for heat, cold, wind, rain, lightning, and all the rest when considering an adventure wedding or hiking elopement.

Meet Your Hiking Elopement Photographer
I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 15 years and counting. I’ve captured over 70 weddings, many of which took place in the Eastern Sierra. In my free time, you'll find me traveling through the southwest and the East Side with my husband in our van, Clyde.
How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
