Death Valley National Park Engagement Session

The vast deserts of the Southwestern United States are full of all kinds of delights—sweeping valleys, jagged mountains, and the most colorful skies.

I like to think of the desert as an open canvas for creativity. It’s no wonder so many sculptures and roadside attractions line the highways of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.

But among all the beautiful places to visit in the Southwest, Death Valley really takes the cake. The geology alone is diverse enough to enchant the senses. You can drive from the lowest point in the United States at 282 feet below sea level, to one of the highest peaks in California at about 11,000 feet—all within the park.

Yes, Death Valley is an awe-inspiring location to snap your engagement photos.

Ide and Mia decided Death Valley was the ideal spot for their engagement photoshoot. Dressed in the height of cowboy fashion, this couple matched perfectly with the wild scenery. From the silver-tipped boots, to the patterned coat and twinning wide-brimmed hats, this duo made for a knockout photo session!

But what made this shoot so special wasn’t the idyllic ambience. Sure, the photos came out great. But what they don’t capture is how rugged the environment really was.

The honest truth was that the park was crazy windy that day. Gusts were so strong that we had to pause repeatedly. But that’s the reality of photographing in the great outdoors. We are completely at the whims of the weather. While this might not be perfect, it is authentic. It’s an adventure—and something my clients crave!

Death Valley is spectacular, but it’s also a harsh climate. You take the good with the bad. But it’s all worth it in the end.

Death Valley: Know Before You Go

So, you want an engagement photoshoot in Death Valley? Good for you! It’s incredible and you can take photos just about anywhere. Admittedly, these rules can change from time to time. So ask your photographer if you have trouble or just have too much to deal with. We’ve all been there!

FYI: Death Valley weddings and elopements are a little more complicated, but still possible!

Wedding photographer Diana Lustig holds her camera and poses for this photo in the rugged desert

Meet Your Death Valley Photographer

I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 15 years and counting. In my free time you'll find me traveling with my husband in our van, Clyde. The deserts of California call to us, and you’ll find us in places like Joshua Tree and Death Valley often.

How did i get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
