Alabama Hills Pet Elopement
Kaleb + Malachi
The untamed wild west feels like a thing of the past. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a rugged environment ripe for adventure. But social media has given us a window into places that used to seem remote, making everything feel a little bit closer and more accessible. Nevertheless, there are still places so beautiful and wild that you recapture that experience of a wide-open world. And one prime example is Alabama Hills near the Eastern Sierra in California.
What makes Alabama Hills such an amazing place to elope? Well, it’s iconic and totally embodies the wild west. That’s probably why so many movies are filmed here. Boulder fields lead up to some of the US’s tallest mountains, making for amazing climbing and hiking. Epic views mean great spots for photos, offroading, and more. And loose pet restrictions make this a great spot for a pet elopement.
It was early in the morning when I met up with Kaleb & Malachi for their wedding photos. Sunrise is always a treat—but it’s especially epic in the mountains. If you get there early enough, it feels like no one else is around. So, you get to experience the alpine glow in near silence and majesty—like watching the world wake up for the first time with your special someone rolled up into your arms.
Kaleb & Malachi had a few priorities for the day. They wanted to start with photos of them dressed sharply in their wedding attire. Followed by pictures of the two grooms loving on their four-legged family member. And closing out the session with a meander through the rocks and boulders to find cool features. And I’m proud to say we accomplished all of that and more!
Kaleb & Malachi got dressed in the early morning light. Their dog (on leash, of course) patiently waited with the couple as they dressed each other, kissed, and posed for photos. Their positive energy was contagious, injecting a joyful mood into every moment.
One of my favorite parts of the day was exploring the desert together. There are so many nooks and crannies to discover—from arches and coves to interesting rock formations and cozy areas for Kaleb & Malachi to tuck into. The landscape is so dynamic that any way you turn has a ton of unique photo opportunities.
After a few hours, Kaleb & Malachi were delighted with the photos I captured. And I think even the puppy was getting tuckered out. So, we called it a wrap!
For the wild desert lovers out there, Alabama Hills in California might be the elopement spot for you!
Tips for Your Alabama Hills Wedding
Alabama Hills is surprisingly rugged and remote. Here are a few things to know when planning your Alabama Hills wedding day:
Leave No Trace: This is always important when eloping outdoors, but even more so at a place like this. Alabama Hills has new restrictions involving visiting and camping due to overuse. Do your part and make sure to pack out all trash, limit campfires, respect wildlife by keeping your distance, and protect flora by not stepping on plants.
Work with your photographer regarding locations, permits, and venues. Alabama Hills requires a permit, so it is important to work with a photographer who can help you understand the process.
Consider the timing and weather. Weekends here can be busy, and holiday weekends are even worse. Stick to weekdays and be flexible. Also, keep in mind this spot can be very windy, especially in winter.
Looking for adventure and activities? If so, Alabama Hills is a hot spot for all sorts of outdoor fun! Climb, hike, scramble, rent a cool car, do some dirtbiking, camp, have a picnic—the options are endless.

Meet Your Alabama Hills Wedding Photographer
I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 15 years and counting. I’ve captured over 50 weddings, 12 of which took place in the Eastern Sierra. In my free time, you'll find me traveling through the southwest and the East Side with my husband in our van, Clyde.
How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
