Bolo Ties for Weddings

I love a good bolo tie.

In fact, you might see me wearing one when I capture weddings. I like to wear button-ups to the weddings I photograph, because it feels professional. But the bolo adds that edge of southwestern style. Because I specialize in adventure weddings and outdoor elopement photos, it just works for that rugged, yet well-dressed vibe.

So, this blog post is all about bolo ties for weddings. It’s a great way to add some personal flair too—since there are so many different types of bolos to choose from.

Background on the Bolo Tie

In case you don’t know, a bolo tie is a type of necktie made from a cord with decorative metal tips and a cinch made from any material. It is typically worn with a button-up shirt in place of a traditional tie—but I’ve also seen it on a collar-less shirt and suit vest, which has its own eclectic charm.

Depending on where you are from, you might have heard it called a bootlace tie, a bola, a cowboy tie, or even the gaucho tie. There are a few different stories about the origin of the bolo tie, but it’s safe to assume that it emerged as an accessory that mixed cowboy attire with elements of Native American jewelry or beaded bandanas. In other words, it’s very much its own thing.

Bolo Ties You Can Buy for Weddings

My favorite way to buy bolos is going to thrift stores or searching for Native American sellers and creators. If you’re on the road as much as I am, you’ll undoubtedly come across vendors or stores owned by indigenous Americans selling bolos.

After that, I recommend checking out small creators on places like Etsy or Instagram.
